Today I’ve made 5 years of drinking no soda!! 💃🎉
Who would have known!!! I had a VERY VERY SWEET tooth!
At home about a decade ago, while my little daughter was called the “bread monster”, I was the “sugar
monster”. I drunk so much sugar, that in fact during my years at university one of my roommates used to say my tea was like honey 🙊.
For years I loved eating sweets, chocolates, cakes…and when I ate, I always had the urge to eat more and I would really eat them in large quantities.
But now to the soda…there is a point in my life where I drunk soda every single day. Even up to 3-4 bottles a day. My sweet tooth just kept craving for more. And I hated drinking water. Only severe thirst would get me to drink water 😀
On that day!
You see, I’d always been health conscious right from my pre-teens. But it’s the sugary stuff that I found so irresistible. This soda thing was so bad that I knew I had to stop…somehow. So on 4th Feb 2019, I just decided. I walked into the supermarket, bought one bottle of soda, I’ll not mention the brand but it was orange in color 🙂. I looked at this bottle and said to myself, “this is going to be my last soda”. When I sat down to drink it, I took my time. When finally I was done, I lifted the bottle. You know that little last drop that’s left at the button of the bottle? I looked at it and in my heart it’s like I was saying to it, “you ain’t going anywhere” 😅
I threw my head back, and made sure that last drop, dropped in my mouth. That gave me a feeling of satisfaction that it was finally done! And indeed it was!!
Did I ever get tempted to drink soda? Yes. Once, some months later. There was soda on my kitchen counter and as I stared at it, so many thoughts were racing in my mind. I nearly reached out to it…to drink it ofcourse…and remembered that I’ll soon make one year soda-free and if I drunk it I would throw away the months I had been disciplined. That was it, and here I am today.
So, while I am celebrating my 5 year no soda mark…
I also want to encourage anyone that knows they have to let go of a certain food or eat in less quantities, you can do it. Especially if you’ve reached an age group where you have to be mindful of your health – I mean 40s+. You can possibly choose a date that is meaningful to you, and tell yourself that when that day comes, that will be your day to let go.
My other sugar journey:
I’ve also gotten off sugar, about maybe 4 years, though in between there I have had times I indulged. But as of now. I don’t add sugar to anything. Even fruits I’ve come to realise there’s fruits if I eat one, I want to eat more and more. So there’s fruits that I am conscious about. Same as occasional party cakes, sweets, chocolates…when I eat a piece, I find that I crave for more. So I am very aware of this, though it’s rare that I eat them.
Otherwise in my day-to-day life, I’m sugar free. In fact, I don’t even drink tea anymore. Without sugar, why drink bitter hot water? 😄 Instead, I drink my plain water, sometimes with lemon and I’m done! Who would have known this would be me! In fact, I have become so radical that my home is now about 97% PROCESSED FOODS FREE 🙈. Story for another day – maybe.
I’m out of here!
Take good care of yourself, stay blessed!

Sugar!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have tried to do without it in vain because…I love tea!!
Maybe like u did, if I do away with tea….then I might be able to drop sugar.
I take too much dinar!!!!
Hi Prisca,
I also used to love tea…sooo much. Of course because of the sugar. Yes, you can try skipping the tea all together. Have you started yet?
Banage, Ruthida, u have melted my heart. Kale. I have tried hard to even reduce the sugar in my cup of tea but then I go back to adding more sugar. Lord help me. I need to get off the sugary stuff too. May be, I will stay with the natural juice n fruits but the sugar will go.
Mukwano Zurah, the struggle with Sugar is real!!!
But with a determined heart you can get off it. The Lord will help you, but you have to do your part, much as your spirit is willing but the flesh is letting you down 🙂
Even with the natural juice and fruits, you’ve got to take in moderation as they are sugar too, a different sugar though.
All the best with your endevour.
This is wonderful Ruthie and very inspiring!!! I’ve such a sweet tooth myself and have always tried to ‘get off sugar’. My sister laughs every time I say to her that I’m off sweets. But guess what, right now, I’ve been sugar free since Wed 10th January ’24 and for me that’s such an achievement. It will be a month on Saturday. I’m actually seated at my computer and looking at a stack of sweets I’ve been given and I haven’t touched even one. As much as I’ve also given them up during this fasting season, I feel like I’ve conquered in a way that I can look at them and not crave them at all and I know that my desire will not be same after the fast. I’ve always drank spicy tea without sugar, that’s my taste.
Otherwise, thank you for this! Yet again, I want to be like you when I grow up!
Have a super day!

Hi Joanita,
Being a sweet tooth is not fun when you come to a realization that you need to get off sugar and sweet stuff. I’m happy to hear that have started the journey of getting off sugar. Congratulations upon your milestone! The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, so you’re totally on the right path.
And if I were you, I would keep the tempting stuff out of sight. And if possible, not even have them in the house.
Thank you so much for reading and for your lovely comment. I’m here cheering you on. And yes, may you “be like me when you grow up!” 😀 You always make me laugh when you say that. 🙂 It’s a beautiful compliment, thank you! 🙂

Congratulations KWIBA Queen for this milestone. Anything sweet makes me nauseous. I also stopped sugar and soda I think in 2020. At times I forget to purchase it even when my kids still like it.
Now I know why you look very young. I am motivated to press on to health leaving
Hi Lois,
